FLAGLER BEACH, Fla.—Darrell Rae was one of the competitors at the independent artists competition at Finn’s Beachside Pub, on Aug. 19. The event was sponsored by Red Stripe Beer and the judges were from WQFB Surf 97.3 FM. He was the headliner. The opening acts were: Next A’ Kin, Bradley Griese, Michael Cooper, Shawn Pruner featuring Evan Falconnie, Kenny Gilliam, Jay Paski and TJ and Ryan. Uncle Eddie and Robin was the direct support.
Rae was introduced as the final performer of the evening by Next A’ Kin’s vocalist and guitarist, Tony Paul Neal. While Rae was being introduced, he strummed a few chords and looped it through his guitar pedal board. After the introduction—Rae spoke into the microphone, as his looped instrumental was heard. He thanked the venue, the radio station and everyone else involved with the songwriter’s contest. He went onto say he will be performing three songs for them. The first song he would play for the audience was “Long Here After”.
“Wish Something Would Come Around” was described as a more of an upbeat song, he had written. He mentioned there was not a story about it yet. He joked with the audience and requested they help him with the meaning, after they finished listening to his lyrics. He went onto say he had written the song a few weeks prior. As he was singing on stage, his roadie sat next to the stage and sang along with him.
After Rae received applause for “Wish Something Would Come Around, he thanked the onlookers for their round of applause. He mentioned “Living For The Moment” was written a few months ago and said he hoped they would like it. He stated the song was also an upbeat song. After completing the song, he mentioned he appreciated everyone for listening.
After Rae concluded his performance, the winner of the competition was announced. Reverend “Capt.” Kirk E. (Elvis) Haskell, radio personality of Surf 97.3 FM, announced Cooper had won the grand prize. He went onto say the other competitors of the final round had the opportunity to receive radio play, if they could provide a compact disc. Neal, added everyone had the opportunity to record a song at his studio. After Cooper received his prize, photos were taken of him and he was requested to perform one more song from the crowd and he granted their request.
