PALM COAST, Fla.—J. Collins performed a two hour set at the Palm Coast Amphitheater at Daytona State College Flagler/Palm Coast Campus, on May 28.
J. Collins is the vocalist and guitarist, John Metcalf is the lead guitarist, Bill McMahon is the rhythm guitarist, Mike “Keys” Vogelson is the keyboardist, Larry Garrett is the drummer and Michael “Rev” Metzger is the bassist of J. Collins. Vogelson, McMahon and Garrett assisted with backup vocals.
After J. Collins’ band mates were introduced, he was the last to be recognized. After arriving at his microphone stand—he removed his baseball cap, spun it towards Vogelson and dawned a cowboy hat. As the instrumental continued—he provided vocals to the title track to his album, “Come Get Some”.
Prior to “His Roots”, J. Collins spoke of the American flag pattern his shirt replicated and performing at a Memorial Day concert. He continued on how the song was about his younger brother, after he served in Afghanistan. He stated whether those were for war or against, they had to respect the armed forces.
Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers’ “Runnin’ Down A Dream”, “Party Our Hats Off”, Jason Aldean’s “Tattoos On This Town”, Justin Moore’s “Til My Last Day”, Keith Urban’s “Somebody Like You”, Garth Brooks’ “Friends In Low Places”, “One Foot In The Gutter”, “Outta My League”, Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” were part of J. Collins’ first set.
Vogelson provided vocals and played his keyboard, to start the second half with Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Have You Ever Seen The Rain”. McMahon provided lyrics to the next two songs, Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Gimme Three Steps” and The Marshall Tucker Band’s “Can’t You See”.
Throughout the performance, J. Collins made his way into the crowd and interacted with them. Metcalf performed numerous guitar solos, Metzger embraced the onlooker’s participation and Garrett led rhythmic claps with percussion. “Still Young” brought an end to the recital, after J. Collins asked if the audience was up for one more song. Upon completion—he said he hoped to see everyone next time, continued to say he would be at the Country Music Awards and hoped everyone could attend.
“Uncle Johnny’s Karaoke Bar”/Johnny Cash’s “Folsom Prison Blues”, Bob Dylan’s “Wagon Wheel”, Jerry Lee Lewis’ “Great Balls Of Fire”, Otis Redding’s “Hard To Handle”, Kid Rock’s “All Summer Long” and “The One For Me” were part of J. Collins’ second set.
